Now in public beta

Speak Icelandic from your very first lesson.

Three minutes from now you can accept a coffee in Icelandic: Já, takk. Takk fyrir kaffið. And you’ll know exactly why the words look the way they do. The first real Icelandic course built as an app, from zero to A1, on your iPhone, no account needed.

The gap

The course that didn’t exist.

Icelandic learners have been stuck choosing between flashcard apps and university textbooks. This is a real course: a single path of 15 themed units from Halló to hobbies, each one teaching the words, the grammar behind them, and a conversation you can actually have. Nobody had built this. So we did.

Real grammar

Tap any word. Understand everything.

Every word carries its full official inflection table, every case, every number, the definite forms too, with audio for every single form. And when you type a real form in the wrong place, the app doesn’t just say wrong. It explains.

Ég sé hundur
Almost. That’s the nominative, and after sjá you need the accusative: hundinn.

No other Icelandic app can do this.

hundur

dog

nounmasculine/hʏntʏr/

The dog, in all four cases

  • nefnifall (nominative)

    hundurinn/hʏntʏrɪn/

    the dog

  • þolfall (accusative)

    hundinn/hʏntɪn/

    what sjá needs

  • þágufall (dative)

    hundinum/hʏntɪnʏm/

    after gefa

  • eignarfall (genitive)

    hundsins/hʏntsɪns/

Memory science

A memory that does the remembering.

Lessons take about three minutes, roughly 15 quick exercises. Behind them, a spaced-repetition schedule tracks what your memory is actually doing and brings each word back right when you’d otherwise forget it. You show up, the schedule does the thinking.

Gamification

Mistakes don’t cost you anything. That’s the point.

There is gamification here: streaks, XP, a daily minutes goal, and streak freezes you earn by studying, not by paying. What there isn’t: hearts, energy bars, or a gem casino. Mistakes are how languages get learned, so they’re free and unlimited. The game is on your side.

The profile screen: a streak, a daily minutes goal you choose, and the two voices

Scene closers

Leave every unit with something you can say.

Every unit ends in a real scene, not a vocabulary quiz. You don’t finish the café unit just knowing the word for coffee. You finish it having ordered one, in Icelandic, in a conversation. From your first lesson to asking for directions, the goal is always the same: things you can actually deploy in Iceland.

Ordering at the café

Anna

Góðan daginn! Hvað má bjóða þér?

Good day! What can I get you?

You

  • Ég
  • ætla
  • kaffi
Correct! You just ordered coffee in Icelandic. +10 XP
  • Sounds like Iceland.

Two Icelandic voices, your pick, plus IPA for everything and a slow replay for when Icelandic does that thing it does. Every clip is reviewed by ear, and every one has a flag button in the app.

  • Private by design.

No account, no sign-up, nothing to hand over. Your lessons and your progress live on your iPhone, and the whole app works offline.

  • Made for Icelandic’s grammar.

Four cases, three genders, definite endings, verbs that change with the person. The course is built around them from the first lesson, not adapted from a Spanish course with the words swapped. Every table is complete and every sentence is checked before it reaches you.

The path

From Halló to fluency, one step at a time.

A1 at launch → A2 + a citizenship-exam track (committed next) → B1 and beyond. Iceland’s citizenship exam sits at roughly A2, so that track is our first expansion. Our levels follow the CEFR scale so your progress maps to something real.

Questions, answered.

What’s in the beta, and what do you want from me?

Units 1–3, complete: greetings, introducing yourself, where you’re from, your family. Every feature is in there, from inflection tables to audio to spaced repetition. It’s pre-release software, so expect rough edges. What helps most is telling us where you got confused, where a word felt wrong, and where you stopped. Every exercise has a flag button, TestFlight has a feedback button, and email always works.

How does TestFlight work?

TestFlight is Apple’s free app for trying pre-release apps. Leave your email; when the build clears Apple’s review you get an invitation with a link. Install TestFlight from the App Store, open the link, and the app installs like any other. New builds update in place, and the App Store version replaces the beta when it launches.

Is the free part really free forever?

Yes. Units 1–3 are free permanently, with every feature: full inflection tables, audio, spaced repetition, the works. Not a trial, no card required. During the beta there is nothing to pay for at all. At launch, a subscription unlocks Units 4–15 and future expansions.

Isn’t there already an app for Icelandic?

Not a course. The apps that include Icelandic are phrase and vocabulary trainers; a structured course that takes you through the grammar from zero didn’t exist. In a language where hundur, hund, hundi and hunds are all ‘dog’, the grammar is not optional. So we built the course.

What level will I reach? What about the citizenship exam?

The launch course takes you from zero to CEFR A1: real conversations like introducing yourself, shopping, ordering, directions and small talk. The Icelandic citizenship exam requires roughly A2. An A2 course with a citizenship-exam track is our committed next expansion, with B1 the direction after that.

Do I need an account? Does it work offline?

No account, ever. There’s nothing to sign up for. Everything runs on your iPhone and works fully offline. Your progress stays on your device (export and import as backup are on the way). At launch, the subscription ties to your Apple ID.

Android? iPad?

iPhone only for now (iOS 17 and later). Android isn’t on the near-term roadmap: going deep on one platform is how a one-person team ships something excellent.

Who’s building this?

A solo developer in Sweden who wanted an Icelandic course that didn’t exist: real grammar, every form voiced, nothing trimmed for beginners. One person building it is exactly why the beta matters. Join it and tell us what’s wrong, that’s the fastest way to make it better.

Byrjum? (Shall we begin?)

The beta runs on TestFlight, by invitation. Leave your email and the invite lands in your inbox as soon as the build clears Apple’s review. Units 1–3, free, on your iPhone, and a founding discount at launch for everyone on the list.
